Common reasons for a domain transfer to fail
A domain transfer can sometimes fail due to incomplete settings or restrictions at the current registrar. Most issues are easy to fix once identified. Below is a list of the most common reasons for a failed transfer and how to check each one before trying again.
Domain privacy is enabled
If domain privacy (also called WHOIS protection or private registration) is turned on, your registrar hides the registrant’s contact information. During a transfer, the administrative contact email must be visible so the new registrar can send a confirmation message. Disable domain privacy before starting the transfer, then wait a few hours for the changes to propagate.
Domain is locked or transfer prohibited
A domain can have a lock status such as Locked, ClientTransferProhibited, or TransferProhibited. This setting prevents unauthorized movement between registrars. Log in to your current registrar’s panel and unlock the domain before requesting the transfer. If the status remains locked after unlocking, contact your registrar for assistance.
Incorrect or expired authorization code (EPP key)
The Authorization Code (or EPP key) is a unique password used to verify that you are the domain owner. The code is case-sensitive and can be used only once. If your transfer fails, you will need to request a new code before retrying. Double-check that the code is copied exactly as given – even an extra space can cause the transfer to fail.
Invalid or outdated administrative email address
A confirmation email is always sent to the administrative contact email listed in the domain’s WHOIS details. If this address is incorrect or inactive, the transfer cannot be approved. Update your contact details at your current registrar and note that any change may lock the domain for 60 days according to ICANN rules.
Domain registration or expiration restrictions
Several time-related restrictions can also prevent a successful transfer:
Registrant has not approved the transfer
Even if all settings are correct, the transfer cannot complete until the current owner approves it. Check your email for a message from the current registrar and confirm the transfer promptly.
JetHost Experts Tip
Changes made to your domain, such as unlocking or updating contact information, may take several hours to propagate across global WHOIS databases. Always verify the updated status before submitting a new transfer request.
