Domain Transfer FAQs
If you’re planning to move your domain to a new registrar, you probably have a lot of domain transfer questions. The process can seem complicated, but it’s mostly about a few administrative steps that ensure your domain is secure during the move. In this FAQ, we’ll answer the most common questions about domain transfers, including requirements, transfer time, and what happens once the transfer is complete.
What is a domain transfer?
A domain transfer is the process of moving your domain name from one registrar to another. When you transfer a domain to JetHost, we become the registrar responsible for managing your domain. As part of the transfer, your domain registration is renewed for 1 additional year.
How long does a domain transfer take?
Most transfers complete within 5–7 days, depending on how quickly your current registrar approves the request. Some transfers can finish sooner if the registrar releases the domain immediately.
Will my website or email go down during the transfer?
No. The transfer only changes the registrar that manages your domain. Your website hosting, DNS records, and email services stay active as long as you don’t make changes during the transfer.
What do I need before starting a transfer?
Before you begin, make sure:
What is an Authorization Code (EPP/Auth Code)?
The domain Authorization code (also known as EPP key) is a security requirement for TLD (top level domains). This works as a safeguard to protect users from people issuing unauthorized domain transfers. You’ll need to request it from your registrar and provide it when placing the transfer order with JetHost.
Where can I get my domain Authorization Code?
This code can be provided only by the company that has registered the domain for you. Usually domain registrars offer you a client area which you can generate the Authorization code from.
Does the transfer add a year to my domain?
Yes. When you transfer a domain to JetHost, it is automatically renewed for 1 year. Any time remaining on your current registration is preserved, so nothing is lost.
Can I transfer a domain that just expired?
In most cases, no. Domains that are expired or in a grace period must first be renewed at your current registrar. Once renewed, you can then request the transfer. Note that 60 days should be wait.
Can I transfer any domain extension?
Most common extensions like .com, .net, .org, and many country-level domains are supported. Some specialized or restricted TLDs may not be transferable. You can check JetHost’s supported TLD list before starting.
What happens if I change my contact email before transfer?
Be cautious. Updating the registrant name, organization, or email at your current registrar often triggers a 60-day transfer lock. This means you won’t be able to transfer the domain until the lock expires. Always check your registrar’s policy before making changes.
