# How to fix FTP connection problems?

FTP won’t connect, or keeps timing out? Most **FTP connection problems** come down to a handful of causes: wrong login details, a blocked port, passive mode, or something on your own computer. FTP is one of the easiest ways to move files to and from your [web hosting](https://jethost.com/web-hosting/) account. This guide works through them in order, with links to the exact settings, and shows the secure alternative that sidesteps the most common culprit. If you’re new to FTP, start with [how to connect your JetHost account via FTP](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-connect-your-jethost-account-via-ftp/).

## 1. Check your login details

Start with the basics, because a “530 Login incorrect” error almost always means a detail is off. Confirm the **server** (your domain if it points to JetHost, otherwise the server hostname or IP from your Client Area), the **username**, the **password**, and **port 21**. Remember an FTP account username is the full address, like `user@yourdomain.com`. If you’re not sure the account exists, see [how to create FTP accounts](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-create-ftp-accounts/), and double-check the values against [your FTP connection details](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-connect-your-jethost-account-via-ftp/).

## 2. Turn on passive mode

If you log in fine but the file list never loads – or transfers hang at 0% – the fix is usually **passive mode (PASV)**. Active mode asks the server to open a connection back to you, which home routers and firewalls block; passive mode lets your client start every connection instead. Nearly every client has the option in its connection or transfer settings. In FileZilla it’s under the site’s Transfer Settings – see [configuring FileZilla settings](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-upload-files-with-filezilla-and-configure-filezilla-settings/).

## 3. Check whether port 21 is blocked

Some networks, offices, and ISPs block port 21 outright. To test, open a terminal or command prompt and run `telnet yourdomain.com 21`. If it connects, you’ll see a welcome message from the FTP server; if it just hangs or fails, port 21 is blocked on your side. A quick way to confirm is to try from a different network – a phone hotspot usually isn’t filtered. If it works there, the block is on your original connection, and your ISP can tell you more.

## 4. Switch to SFTP

If port 21 is blocked – or you’d simply rather use an encrypted connection – stop using plain FTP and connect with **SFTP** instead. Use your cPanel username and password, and port **1022** (JetHost’s SSH port). SFTP runs over a different port, so it usually works even where FTP is filtered, and your login and files travel encrypted. Learn the difference in [what is FTP and SFTP?](https://jethost.com/kb/what-is-ftp-and-sftp/), then set it up with [Cyberduck](https://jethost.com/kb/ftp-connect-cyberduck/).

## 5. Other things to check

- **Your firewall or antivirus** – security software can block FTP. Temporarily disable it to test, then add an exception for your client.
- **“421 Too many connections”** – your client opened too many at once. Lower the simultaneous-connections limit in its settings, and wait a minute before retrying.
- **Your IP got temporarily blocked** – several wrong password attempts can trip the firewall and block your IP for a while. Wait a bit and retry, or open a ticket with your current IP so we can clear it.
- **An outdated client** – update to the latest version, which fixes many connection and TLS issues.

## Still stuck? Save a log

If nothing above helps, your FTP client can save a **log** of the connection attempt – in FileZilla you can copy or export the message log from the top of the window. Send that log to our support team: it shows exactly where the connection fails (login, listing, or transfer) and lets us pinpoint the cause far faster than a “it doesn’t work” description.

## JetHost Experts Tip

Need to upload right now while you sort out FTP? Use cPanel’s File Manager in your browser – it works over HTTPS, so it keeps going even when port 21 is blocked on your network. See our [FTP vs File Manager](https://jethost.com/kb/ftp-vs-file-manager/) guide.

## Need more help?

Tried everything and still can’t connect? Open a ticket through **Client Area → Support** with your client’s log and our team will get you connected.
