How to Fix the ERR_CACHE_MISS Error
ERR_CACHE_MISS shows up in Chrome when the browser expected a page from its cache and couldn’t use it. You often see it after submitting a form, or with the message “Confirm Form Resubmission.” It usually points to the browser, an extension, or a caching layer on the site – and most cases clear in a minute. Here is what to try, first as a visitor, then as the site owner.
What the error means
Your browser keeps a local copy of pages so they load faster. ERR_CACHE_MISS appears when it needs that copy but can’t read or reuse it – often because a form was resubmitted, a cached file is corrupt, or an extension changed the request. It is a browser-side message, not a sign that your data is lost.
Quick fixes to try first
Work through these in order:
- Reload the page. If a “Confirm Form Resubmission” box appears, go back and send the form again rather than refreshing.
- Open the page in Incognito. If it loads there, an extension or a cached file is the cause.
- Clear your browser cache and cookies, then try again.
- Turn off extensions one by one – ad blockers and privacy tools are the usual suspects.
- Update your browser to the latest version.
- Reset the network cache: in Chrome open
chrome://net-internals/#dnsand clear the host cache, or flush your DNS cache.
If the website is yours
When visitors report the error, look at the caching on your side:
- Clear your site cache – the caching plugin, the server cache, and any CDN such as Cloudflare. Then reload.
- Check for two caching layers fighting each other, for example a cache plugin on top of server caching. Keep one.
- Review custom cache headers in
.htaccess. A wrong rule can tell browsers not to store the page. - Deactivate your caching plugin for a moment and retest. If the error goes, adjust that plugin’s settings.
On JetHost hosting
JetHost serves sites through LiteSpeed, which has its own cache. Clear it from the LiteSpeed Cache plugin in WordPress, or ask us and we’ll flush the server cache for you. If the error only started after a plugin or CDN change, that change is the first place to look.
JetHost Experts Tip
If the error only hits one page after a form submit, it is almost always the browser, not your site. Test in Incognito before you start clearing server caches.
Frequently asked questions
Not usually. It is a browser message about a cached page, most often after resubmitting a form. Clearing the cache or trying Incognito sorts out the majority of cases.
Refreshing a page that was loaded by submitting a form asks the browser to send that form again. Go back and submit once more instead of refreshing.
The exact wording is Chrome’s, but other browsers hit the same caching issue under different names. The fixes are the same.
