ERR\_SSL\_VERSION\_OR\_CIPHER\_MISMATCH means your browser and the server could not agree on a shared way to secure the connection. They tried to find a common security protocol and encryption method, and failed. The cause is usually an outdated protocol on one side, an old browser, or a wrong clock. Here is how to fix it, first as a visitor, then as the site owner.

## What the error means

To open an HTTPS page, your browser and the server must share a security protocol (TLS) and an encryption method (a cipher). If the browser offers only modern ones and the server offers only old ones – or the reverse – they have nothing in common and the connection stops. It is a mismatch, not a sign your data is at risk.

## Quick fixes to try first

1. Update your browser and operating system. An old version often lacks the current protocols.
2. Check your device’s date and time, then set it to update automatically.
3. Open the site in Incognito, and clear your browser cache.
4. Switch off any antivirus “HTTPS scanning” and any VPN, then retry.

## If the website is yours

1. Offer a current protocol. The server should support TLS 1.2 and 1.3 and drop the old, insecure ones.
2. Use a modern cipher set. A very old or custom cipher list can leave nothing in common with up-to-date browsers.
3. Check the certificate is valid and complete. See [free Let’s Encrypt SSL](https://jethost.com/kb/lets-encrypt-ssl/) to issue a fresh one, and [ERR\_CERT\_AUTHORITY\_INVALID](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-fix-err-cert-authority-invalid/) for trust issues.

## On JetHost hosting

JetHost servers run current TLS protocols and ciphers, so this error is rare on sites hosted with us. If you see it after a certificate or server change, open a ticket and we’ll check the protocol and cipher settings. A closely related message is [ERR\_SSL\_PROTOCOL\_ERROR](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-fix-err-ssl-protocol-error/).

## JetHost Experts Tip

If only old devices hit this error, the cause is almost always their outdated protocol support, not your server. Keep TLS 1.2 and 1.3 on and let the ancient ones go – they are no longer safe anyway.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is the site unsafe?**No. The browser stopped because it could not agree on a secure method, which is a protective step. It does not mean the site is compromised.

**Why does it work on my phone but not my old laptop?**Newer devices support current protocols; an old laptop may only offer outdated ones the server no longer accepts. Updating it usually fixes the error.

**I run the site – should I just re-enable old TLS?**No. Old TLS versions are insecure and browsers are dropping them. Fix the few old clients instead, and keep the server on TLS 1.2 and 1.3.
