HTTP Error 503 – “Service Unavailable” – means the server is up but can’t handle the request right now. It is usually temporary: a traffic spike, a resource limit, scheduled maintenance, or, on WordPress, an update that got stuck. Here is how to clear it.

## What the error means

A 503 is the server saying “not now.” Unlike a 500, nothing is broken – the server is simply too busy, out of resources, or deliberately offline for a moment. The job is to find which, and whether it clears on its own.

## If you are just visiting

Wait a minute and reload – a 503 is often short-lived, especially if the site is updating or briefly overloaded. If it lasts, the owner needs to look into it.

## If the website is yours

1. Check for a stuck WordPress update. If a plugin or core update failed, WordPress can leave a `.maintenance` file in the site root that forces a 503. Delete that file and reload.
2. Rule out overload. A traffic spike or a heavy plugin or query can exhaust resources. Pause a suspect plugin and watch whether the 503 clears.
3. Read the error log for the cause – see [how to find and fix PHP errors](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-find-and-fix-php-errors-logs-and-debugging/).
4. Check whether maintenance is planned. If your host is doing scheduled work, the 503 is expected and will end when it finishes.

## On JetHost hosting

If a 503 persists on a site you host with us and there is no stuck update, open a ticket and we’ll check your resources and the server. Regular 503s under load usually mean it is time for a bigger plan. ## JetHost Experts Tip

If the 503 started right after a WordPress update, look for a hidden `.maintenance` file in your site root and delete it. That one step fixes the most common WordPress 503.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does a 503 mean my site is hacked or broken?**No. The server is reachable but temporarily refusing requests – usually load, maintenance, or a stuck update, not damage.

**My site is stuck on “briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance.”**That is WordPress’s maintenance message from an interrupted update. Delete the `.maintenance` file in the site root to clear it.

**Will it fix itself?**Often yes, if it was a spike or maintenance. If it keeps returning, look at resources and plugins or ask your host.
