# How to point a domain to your site or IP

To make a domain (or a subdomain) load a specific website, you point it to a server’s IP address using an **A record**. This guide shows how to point your root domain, `www`, and other subdomains to your site or IP using the JetHost **DNS Manager**.

**Before you start:** your domain must use JetHost DNS for these records to take effect. If it does not, point your nameservers to JetHost first – see [How to change nameservers at JetHost](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-change-nameservers-at-jethost/).

## Point your root domain to an IP

1. Open the **DNS Manager** for your domain and go to the **Records** tab.
2. Click **+ Add Record** and choose **A**.
3. In the **Name** field enter `@` (this is the root/apex of your domain).
4. In the **Record** field enter the IPv4 address of your server (for example `15.204.22.60`).
5. Leave **TTL** at `3600` unless you have a reason to change it, then click **Save changes**.

To make `www.yourdomain.com` work, add a **CNAME** record with the **Name** `www` pointing to your root domain (`@` or `yourdomain.com`). Alternatively, add a second **A** record named `www` pointing to the same IP as your root domain.

## Point a subdomain

To point a subdomain such as `shop.yourdomain.com`, add an **A** record with the **Name** `shop` and the target IP in the Record field. To alias a subdomain to another hostname (for example a page builder or CDN), use a **CNAME** record instead and enter the destination hostname as the value.

## Point everything with a wildcard

A record with the **Name** `*` is a wildcard that catches any subdomain that does not have its own record. This is useful when you want all subdomains to resolve to the same server.

## Verify the change

DNS changes can take up to **24–48 hours** to propagate worldwide, though they often apply much sooner. If your site does not load right away, wait and clear your browser cache, or see [How to troubleshoot DNS issues](https://jethost.com/kb/how-to-troubleshoot-dns-issues/).

Do not create a CNAME on the root domain (`@`) – the apex must use an A (or AAAA) record. Use CNAME only for subdomains such as `www`.
