How to Fix the ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED Error
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means your browser could not turn the web address into an IP number, so it never found the server to connect to. The cause is almost always DNS – a typo, your DNS settings, or the domain itself not resolving. Here is how to fix it as a visitor, and what to check if the domain is yours.
What the error means
Every site name is matched to a number by DNS. When that lookup fails, the browser has no address to reach and reports the name as not resolved. Usually the name is misspelled, your DNS server is not answering, or the domain’s own DNS is not set up or has not spread yet.
Quick fixes to try first
- Check the address for typos, then reload.
- Restart your router and device.
- Flush your DNS cache to drop a stale record.
- Switch to a public DNS server – Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8). See what a public DNS server is.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy and try again.
If it’s your own domain
When only your domain fails to resolve, the DNS behind it needs a look:
- Confirm the name servers are set correctly – see where to find JetHost name servers.
- If you just changed DNS or moved host, give it time – DNS propagation can take a while.
- Make sure the domain is active and not expired, and that an A record points to your server. For records, see managing DNS records at JetHost.
On JetHost hosting
If a domain you host with us won’t resolve for anyone and the name servers and records look right, open a ticket and we’ll check the DNS zone. A related message is DNS server not responding.
JetHost Experts Tip
Switch your device to 1.1.1.1 and reload. If the site then opens, your old DNS server was the problem; if it still fails, the domain’s own DNS is where to look.
Frequently asked questions
Not usually. The name just failed to resolve to an address. That is often a DNS setting or a recent change still spreading, not a deleted site.
Your computer likely has a stale DNS cache or a different DNS server. Flush the cache and switch to a public DNS to match.
DNS changes take time to spread. If the name servers and records are right, give propagation a few hours and test again.
