How to Fix the ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS Error
“Too many redirects” (ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS) means the page keeps sending the browser somewhere else, which sends it back, in a loop that never lands. The browser gives up and shows the error. On WordPress it almost always comes from the site address settings, an HTTPS redirect fighting itself, or a CDN like Cloudflare. Here is how to break the loop.
What the error means
A redirect tells the browser “this page lives somewhere else, go there.” A loop happens when page A points to B and B points back to A. The browser follows a few hops, sees it will never stop, and shows the error to protect you. The fix is to find the two rules pulling against each other and keep one.
Quick fixes to try first
- Clear the cookies for that site, then reload. Old cookies cause many loops.
- Open the page in Incognito. If it works there, clear your browser cache and cookies fully.
- Try another browser to confirm the loop is on the site, not your device.
If the website is yours
- Check your site address. In WordPress open Settings → General and make sure WordPress Address and Site Address match exactly – same
https://and the same www or non-www form. - Pick one address and stick to it. Redirecting www to non-www (or the reverse) is fine; redirecting both ways is a loop.
- Don’t force HTTPS twice. If a plugin forces HTTPS and the server does too, remove one. If the site broke after enabling SSL, see website not working after SSL.
- Using Cloudflare? Set SSL to Full, not Flexible. Flexible SSL is the most common cause of this loop.
- Review redirect rules in
.htaccess, then clear every cache – plugin, server, and CDN.
On JetHost hosting
On JetHost, AutoSSL installs a free certificate and the server handles the HTTPS redirect, so you rarely need a separate “force HTTPS” plugin. If you can’t find the loop, open a ticket and we’ll trace the redirects for you. For background on moving to HTTPS cleanly, see free Let’s Encrypt SSL.
JetHost Experts Tip
If the loop started the moment you put the site behind Cloudflare, check the SSL mode first. Flexible tells Cloudflare to talk to your server over HTTP while the server redirects back to HTTPS – a perfect loop. Full fixes it.
Frequently asked questions
The loop often hits the front end while the admin still loads. That is your chance to fix the Site Address settings or deactivate the plugin causing it.
Clearing cookies and trying Incognito tells you fast. If the loop follows you across browsers and devices, it is the site.
Yes. A redirect added in a plugin can clash with one in .htaccess or in WordPress settings. Deactivate the plugin, test, then re-add the rule once.
