Set up email on your device

Want your email in a phone or desktop app instead of the browser? To set up email on your device, you add your mailbox to a mail app using a few standard settings. This guide explains those settings, and the difference between IMAP and POP3 so you can pick the right one.

IMAP or POP3: which should you choose?

These are the two protocols for receiving email, and the choice matters:

• IMAP keeps your mail on the server and syncs it across every device. Read a message on your phone and it shows as read on your laptop; folders match everywhere. This is the right choice for almost everyone, especially if you use more than one device.
• POP3 downloads mail to one device and, by default, removes it from the server. It suits a single device with limited storage, or when you deliberately want a local-only copy – but your mail won’t stay in sync elsewhere.

In short: choose IMAP unless you have a specific reason not to.

Your email settings

Whatever app you use, enter these secure values. Replace yourdomain.com with your own domain:

• Username: your full email address (e.g. you@yourdomain.com)
• Password: the mailbox password
• Mail server (incoming & outgoing): mail.yourdomain.com
• IMAP: port 993, SSL/TLS   |   POP3: port 995, SSL/TLS
• Outgoing (SMTP): port 465 (SSL/TLS) or port 587 (STARTTLS/TLS), with SMTP authentication on

Add the account to your app

The exact wording differs by app, but the steps are the same everywhere:

1. Open your mail app and choose to add a new account, selecting Other / IMAP (not Gmail, iCloud, etc.).
2. Enter your full email address and password.
3. When asked, enter the incoming and outgoing server and ports above, with SSL turned on.
4. Save, then send yourself a test message to confirm it works.

Alternative settings (server hostname)

If your domain does not point to JetHost yet, use your server hostname as the mail server instead of mail.yourdomain.com. It looks like this:

• Mail server: your server hostname, e.g. XXX.jethosting.com
• The ports stay the same – IMAP 993, POP3 995, SMTP 465 or 587, all with SSL/TLS.
• The username is still your full email address.

You can find your exact server hostname under client area -> Services -> Manage.
