How to Block Unwanted Emails

Unwanted email falls into two groups: a specific sender you want gone, and the steady drip of spam from everywhere. JetHost gives you a tool for each – a filter to block a known sender, and a spam filter to catch the rest. This guide shows how to set up both from your mailbox and cPanel.

Block a specific sender

To stop mail from one address or domain, add a filter that discards it:

1. Log in to your webmail and open Email Filters, or use Email Filters in cPanel.
2. Create a new filter. Set the condition to From contains the address (or the whole domain, like @spammer.com).
3. Set the action to Discard, or move it to a folder if you’d rather review it. Save.

Cut the general spam

For the broader flood you can’t name sender by sender, turn to the spam filter. In cPanel, Spam Filters (Apache SpamAssassin) scores each message and can move or delete the obvious junk. Our guide to email spam filters walks through switching it on and tuning how strict it is.

Block or filter – which to use

Block a sender when you know exactly who to stop – one address or one domain. Lean on the spam filter for everything else, since new junk arrives from new addresses every day and a blocklist alone can never keep up. Most people run both: a short blocklist for repeat offenders, and the spam filter underneath it.
